November 29, 2024 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), in collaboration with its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) Tbk. Ulubelu Area, Lampung, organized a tree-planting event to commemorate Indonesia Tree Planting Day. The event took place on degraded land in partnership with the Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) Margo Rukun Bestari, a fostered partner of PGE Ulubelu Area.
Degraded land refers to areas within and outside forest zones that have lost their productive and water-regulating functions, making them vulnerable to landslides, especially during heavy rainfall.
The tree-planting activity on Thursday (28/11) in Ulubelu District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, was enthusiastically attended by residents. KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari played an active role as a partner in implementing this reforestation program. Planting trees on degraded land is expected to improve environmental quality and provide long-term ecological benefits. This initiative synergy effort between the company and local communities is to maintain environmental balance.
According to Corporate Secretary of Pertamina NRE, Dicky Septriadi, in addition to supporting reforestation efforts, Pertamina NRE continues to operate with sustainability principles at the forefront. "This initiative aligns with the company’s vision to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060. This collaboration underscores Pertamina NRE’s commitment to being part of the global solution to climate change," Dicky explained.
This tree-planting initiative serves as Pertamina NRE's strategy to address the adverse effects of land conversion, which often leads to disasters such as landslides. The program aims to strengthen soil structures, reduce disaster risks, and restore ecosystem balance. Chairperson of KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari, Wastoyo, hoped for continued joint efforts with Pertamina. “We hope activities like this can serve as an educational platform for the community, highlighting the importance of caring for the environment and planting trees,” Wastoyo said.
Acting General Manager of PT PGE Ulubelu Area, Rawan Mirza, added this is a routine activity for PGE Ulubelu, alongside maintaining geothermal power plant productivity, which fulfills approximately 24% of Lampung Province’s electricity needs. “We have conducted various activities to improve community welfare through social forestry empowerment, including fostering groups like KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari. We hope these initiatives will be beneficial and enable us to continue contributing to the community,” Rawan said.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that tree planting is part of Pertamina Group's Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) program to conserve nature and reduce emissions. “One of Pertamina’s visions as a responsible company is environmental conservation, such as the Pertamina Forest program. Similarly, this tree-planting activity aims to positively impact land ecosystems and encourage community participation in preserving nature,” Fadjar explained.
