Jakarta, December 31, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) remains committed to supporting clean energy education among students through its Sekolah Energi Berdikari (SEB/Independent Energy Schools) program.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, stated that the SEB program integrates the focus of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities within the pillars of Environment and Education.
“Through the Sekolah Energi Berdikari program, Pertamina hopes to contribute to creating a younger generation that is environmentally conscious and prepared to face future climate change challenges,” said Fadjar.
He added that Pertamina initiated the SEB program in June 2023. Last year, SEB reached 11 schools and educated 5,135 students on clean energy. Pertamina also installed solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 33 kWp, reducing carbon emissions by 42 tons of CO2eq annually.
The program continues to expand to other schools across Indonesia to foster an environmentally conscious educational ecosystem. This year, Pertamina added 12 Sekolah Energi Berdikari nationwide.
One of the SEB initiatives took place at SMAN 1 Maos in Cilacap Regency on Friday, December 20, 2024. The program aimed to enhance students' literacy on clean energy and promote sustainable practices within the school environment.
Pertamina installed a 3.3 kWp solar power plant and a 5 kWh energy storage battery to support the physics laboratory’s operations. This setup serves as a hands-on learning tool for students about renewable energy technology. The PLTS is expected to save up to IDR 6.8 million annually in electricity costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.82 tons of CO2eq annually, contributing to sustainable school efforts.
In addition to renewable energy installations, students were introduced to waste reduction concepts through upcycling expos, drug-free youth initiatives supporting sustainable schools, food waste management using maggots, clean energy culture, and energy conservation through PLTS utilization.
“We greatly appreciate this program for its positive impact on our students. The clean energy education and PLTS installation have helped create a greener and more sustainable learning environment,” said Amin, S.Pd., M.Pd., Principal of SMAN 1 Maos.
Similarly, Pertamina extended the program to SMK Tamtama 2 Sidareja in Cilacap, Central Java, by installing a 3.3 kWp PLTS with a 5 kWh energy storage battery to support the operations of the Audio-Visual Technology workshop. This initiative is expected to save electricity costs of IDR 6.8 million annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.82 tons of CO2 per year.
The educational activities at SMK Tamtama 2 included tree planting campaigns, upcycling competitions, and an expo with the theme “Together for a Sustainable Environment Starting Early,” involving 497 students.
Ruswanto, S.T., M.M., Principal of SMK Tamtama 2 Sidareja, expressed his gratitude for Pertamina's support in fostering environmental awareness among students.
“We are grateful for Pertamina’s attention and support, enabling us and our students to realize an environmentally friendly school. The PLTS installation allows students to learn and innovate with renewable energy,” said Ruswanto.
Desa Energi Berdikari
In addition to the SEB program, Pertamina continues to expand clean energy development through its Desa Energi Berdikari (DEB/Independent Energy Villages) program. The DEB program has reached 149 locations, benefiting 34,190 recipients, including over 30 individuals with disabilities. This program has successfully reduced carbon emissions by 729,545 tons of CO2eq annually and boosted local economies by IDR 3.3 billion per year.
PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Maos carried out one DEB initiative in Mernek Village, Maos, Cilacap Regency. Pertamina installed a 6.6 kWp PLTS to support hydroponic houses, rice drying machines, and tourism area operations. It demonstrates Pertamina’s commitment to integrating eco-friendly technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability in agriculture in Mernek Village.
Fadjar highlighted that over 2,154 village farmers actively participated in these activities, supplying 90 tons of food products to distributors.
“Not only do the communities gain new knowledge, but they also have opportunities to increase income by managing kawista production, yielding an average income of IDR 5.7 million per month,” said Fadjar.
The positive impact of PLTS utilization is also evident in greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 8.58 tons of CO2eq annually and electricity savings of up to IDR 14 million per year. Rice production in the village has increased from 2.5 tons per hectare to four tons per hectare.
Bustanul, Head of Mernek Village, shared that the DEB program increased farmers' income by IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 per ton of harvest.
“We appreciate Pertamina’s support and hope this collaboration continues to grow,” said Bustanul.
This program aligns with the government’s efforts to achieve the Net Zero Emissions target by 2060. In addition to contributing to carbon emission reductions, clean energy development at the village level supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly on clean and affordable energy, decent work and economic growth, and climate action.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
